Air conditioning system installation by Paragon Air technicians in Sydney

So you’ve decided ducted is the right fit for your home. The next step is understanding what quality ducted air conditioning installation Sydney homes can rely on actually involves, how long it takes and whether your house is ready for it. This guide walks you through the whole process, from the first site inspection to the moment cool air comes out of every vent.

At Paragon Air we’ve completed more than 3,500 installations across Sydney since 2018, from the Hills District to the Sutherland Shire. Below we answer the questions homeowners ask us most before they book, so you know exactly what to expect and what to ask any installer.

What happens during a ducted air conditioning installation, step by step?

A good ducted air conditioning installation follows a clear sequence. Here’s how we run every job at Paragon Air:

  1. Free site inspection. A technician visits your home, checks the roof cavity, measures rooms, looks at insulation and window exposure, and talks through how you use each space.
  2. System design and quote. We work out the right kW capacity, the number of zones, vent positions and the best brand for your budget, then give you a fixed, no-obligation quote.
  3. Installation day prep. Our team protects floors and furniture, sets up access to the roof space and confirms vent and controller locations with you.
  4. Indoor unit and ductwork. The indoor fan coil goes into the roof cavity (or under the floor in some homes). Insulated flexible ducts are run from the unit to each room, and ceiling outlets are cut in.
  5. Outdoor unit and refrigerant lines. The outdoor unit is mounted on a pad or brackets, then connected to the indoor unit with copper refrigerant pipe, drainage and control cabling.
  6. Electrical connection. A licensed electrician connects the system to your switchboard on its own dedicated circuit.
  7. Zoning and controls. Zone dampers and the wall controller or app system (such as MyAir, AirTouch or iZone) are installed and set up.
  8. Commissioning and handover. We pressure test and vacuum the refrigerant lines, check airflow in every room, then show you how to use the system and its zones.

You can see the systems we install on our ducted air conditioning page.

How long does it take to install ducted air conditioning?

Most ducted aircon installation jobs in Sydney take 1 to 2 days on site. A single storey home with good roof access and 4 to 6 zones is usually done in a day or a day and a half.

A few things can stretch the timeline:

  • Double storey homes, where ducts must reach the upper level through wall cavities or bulkheads
  • Tight or low roof spaces that slow down duct runs
  • Replacing an old system, which means removing the existing unit and, sometimes, old ductwork
  • Electrical upgrades at the switchboard before the system can be connected

The wait before installation day is usually longer than the install itself. Once you accept a quote, allow time for equipment to arrive and for scheduling, especially in the busy lead-up to summer. Booking your free site inspection in winter or early spring is the easiest way to beat the rush.

Can you install ducted air conditioning in an existing home?

Yes. Plenty of homes in the Inner West, St George and Canterbury-Bankstown were built long before ducted systems were common, and they can be retrofitted with very little disruption. You don’t need to be building or renovating to install ducted air conditioning.

In an existing home, the indoor unit and ducts sit in the roof space, so very little happens inside your living areas. The visible work is limited to:

  • Round or linear ceiling vents in each room
  • One or more return air grilles, usually in a hallway
  • A wall controller (or app control only, if you prefer)
  • The outdoor unit beside the house

If you are planning a renovation or a new build, it’s still worth bringing us in early. Running ducts before ceilings and walls are closed in gives more flexibility, especially in double storey homes.

Does my roof space suit ducted air conditioning?

The roof cavity is the single biggest factor in whether ducted will work. The indoor unit is large, and the ducts need room to run to every outlet without being crushed or kinked.

At your site inspection we check:

  • Access and clearance: enough height to fit the indoor unit and move around it for future servicing
  • Roof structure: trusses and beams that can support the unit safely
  • Space for duct runs: clear paths to each room and back to the return air grille
  • Insulation and heat: how hot the roof gets in summer, which affects duct insulation choices

What if I have a flat roof or slab ceiling?

Flat and skillion roofs, and apartments or units with concrete slab ceilings, are generally unsuitable for a standard ducted system because there’s no cavity to hide the unit and ducts. In some homes a bulkhead or under-floor installation can work. In others, a multi-split system or a bulkhead unit is the smarter choice. We’ll tell you honestly which option suits your home rather than forcing a ducted system where it doesn’t belong.

Do I need 3 phase power for ducted air conditioning?

Not always. Many residential ducted systems run on standard single phase power, which is what most Sydney homes have. Larger systems, typically at the upper end of the capacity range used for big or double storey homes, may require 3 phase power, depending on the model.

What matters is matching the system to your home’s electrical supply. During the site inspection we check:

  • Whether your home is single phase or 3 phase
  • The condition and capacity of your switchboard
  • Whether a dedicated circuit and isolator can be added easily

If your home is single phase, we’ll recommend a system that runs on it wherever possible. Many single phase options cover even large homes well. If a switchboard upgrade is needed, we’ll flag it in your quote so there are no surprises on installation day.

Can I use my existing ducted heating ducts for air conditioning?

Sometimes, but often not as is. Ducted gas heating is designed to push warm air, which naturally rises, usually through floor vents. Cooling needs a higher airflow, and cool air works best coming from the ceiling.

Whether your old ducts can be reused depends on:

  • Duct size: cooling usually needs larger ducts than heating alone
  • Duct condition: older ducts can be torn, crushed or poorly insulated
  • Vent location: floor outlets can cool, but ceiling outlets do the job far better
  • Insulation rating: ducts in a hot Sydney roof need good insulation to avoid losing cooling

In many cases, the most reliable result comes from new ductwork paired with a reverse cycle system, which then heats and cools from one unit. If your existing ducts are in good shape and the right size, we’ll tell you and factor that into your quote.

Where should the indoor unit, outdoor unit and vents be placed?

Good placement is what separates a quiet, even, efficient system from one that’s noisy and leaves some rooms stuffy. Here’s what we plan for:

Component Where it usually goes What we’re balancing
Indoor unit Central spot in the roof cavity Short, even duct runs to every room and safe service access
Outdoor unit Side or rear of the house, on a pad or brackets Airflow, noise near bedrooms and neighbours, short pipe run
Supply vents Ceilings, away from where people sit or sleep directly Even air spread without cold drafts
Return air grille Hallway or central living area Free air path back to the unit from every zone
Controller Main living area or hallway Easy to reach, away from direct sun and heat sources

The outdoor unit also needs clear space around it to breathe. As a general guide, keep about a metre clear in front of it and avoid boxing it in. Tell us about any outdoor plans (a new deck, pool or garden bed) so we can position it where it won’t get in the way.

Why should ducted air conditioning only be installed by licensed technicians?

A ducted system involves refrigerant, high voltage electrical work and structural work in your roof. In Australia, handling refrigerant requires a licence, and connecting the system to your switchboard must be done by a licensed electrician. Cutting corners here can affect your safety, your warranty and your insurance.

When comparing ducted air conditioning installers in Sydney, check that they:

  • Hold a current refrigerant handling licence (ours is LN AU57226)
  • Are fully licensed and insured for the work they do in your home
  • Are authorised dealers for the brands they sell, which protects your manufacturer warranty
  • Offer a workmanship warranty on top of the manufacturer’s cover
  • Do a proper site inspection instead of quoting over the phone

Poor installation is a common cause of problems down the track: undersized ducts, crushed duct runs, refrigerant leaks and noisy outdoor units. A quality ducted air conditioning installation in Sydney should run quietly and efficiently for many years.

That’s why every Paragon Air system is installed by our licensed and insured team of more than 15 technicians, and why we back our workmanship with a 5 year labour warranty. We’re authorised dealers for leading brands including Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric and Actron Air, whose ducted systems typically come with a 5 year manufacturer warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does ducted air conditioning installation cost in Sydney?

A standard 3 to 4 bedroom home typically costs $8,400 to $14,700 for supply and ducted air conditioning installation in Sydney. Premium or zoned systems usually range from $12,600 to $23,100, and double storey homes sit at the top of the range. We confirm your exact price with a free, no-obligation on-site quote.

What warranty comes with a ducted aircon installation?

Every ducted aircon installation we complete comes with our 5-year labour warranty on all workmanship. On top of that, the major brands we install, including Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric and Actron Air, typically carry a 5-year manufacturer warranty. Regular servicing helps keep that cover in place over the life of your system.

Can I add zones when I install ducted air conditioning?

Yes. Zoning is easiest to set up when you install ducted air conditioning, because motorised dampers fit straight into the new ductwork. We can pair your system with controllers like MyAir, AirTouch or iZone, so you can heat or cool only the rooms you use and control everything from your phone.

Which brands do your ducted air conditioning installers in Sydney fit?

Our ducted air conditioning installers in Sydney fit systems from Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric and Actron Air, as we are authorised dealers for these brands. Their ranges cover capacities from compact 5.0 kW units up to large 25 kW systems, so we can match the right model to your home’s size and layout.

Can I get finance for a ducted air conditioning installation?

Yes. Eligible NSW homeowners can access 0% interest finance of up to $15,000 through our partner Brighte, with up to 10 years to repay, subject to approval. It lets you spread the cost of a ducted air conditioning installation rather than paying the full amount upfront. Ask us about it during your free quote.
